Turning Plastic Waste into Comfort, Compassion & Community Impact
The Bags to Mats Project, part of S.O.N.S. Serves With A Purpose (SWAP), is a year-round, youth-led community service initiative that transforms clean, recyclable plastic bags into handmade sleeping mats for individuals experiencing homelessness.
Through this hands-on initiative, young participants learn the importance of environmental responsibility, teamwork, leadership, and compassion while creating something meaningful for those in need.
By turning everyday plastic waste into a practical resource, we are empowering the next generation to make a difference—one bag, one mat, and one act of kindness at a time.
How It Works
Every plastic bag has the potential to make a difference. Through teamwork, creativity, and compassion, our young volunteers transform everyday plastic waste into practical sleeping mats for individuals experiencing homelessness.
Step 1 – Collect
Community members donate clean, dry plastic bags that would otherwise contribute to waste.
Step 2 – Prepare
Volunteers sort, flatten, and cut the bags into strips, creating recycled plastic yarn known as plarn.
Step 3 – Create
Using simple weaving or crocheting techniques, volunteers transform the prepared materials into durable, lightweight sleeping mats.
Step 4 – Give Back
The finished mats are prepared for distribution to individuals experiencing homelessness, offering an additional layer of comfort and protection from the ground.
