The Plarn Party
Turning Plastic Bags into Purpose, One Strip at a Time.
The Plarn Party brings volunteers together through S.O.N.S. Foundation's Service With A Purpose (SWAP) initiative to transform recycled plastic bags into plarn (plastic yarn) used to create sleeping mats for individuals experiencing homelessness.
Through teamwork, creativity, and compassion, every helping hand contributes to a more sustainable and caring community.
Why It Matters
By repurposing plastic bags into plarn, we reduce plastic waste while creating materials that can be used to craft durable sleeping mats for those in need. Every roll of plarn contributes to a larger effort to support our community through service with a purpose.
How We Make Plarn
Step 1 – Flatten the Bag
Lay the plastic bag flat, tuck in the sides, and smooth it out.
Step 2 – Trim the Bag
Cut off the handles and bottom seam.
Step 3 – Create Loops
Cut the remaining plastic tube into 2–3 inch strips to create loops.
Step 4 – Join the Loops
Connect the loops to form one long strand of plarn.
Step 5 – Roll into Balls
Wind the plarn into balls, ready to be crocheted into sleeping mats.
