Turn Plastic Bags into Comfort

The Plastic Bags to Mats Project is a year-long, youth-led service initiative organized by SONS Serves with A Purpose (SWAP). From January 1 through December 31, youth participants collect clean, recyclable plastic bags and repurpose them into sleeping mats for individuals experiencing homelessness.

• These mats provide a moisture barrier, insulation, and comfort while also reducing plastic waste in local landfills.

• Addresses homelessness through practical, dignity-centered solutions
• Reduces plastic waste and promotes environmental responsibility
• Empowers youth with leadership, service-learning, and teamwork skills
• Encourages community collaboration and civic engagement

We accept clean, dry, recyclable plastic bags including grocery bags, bread bags, and similar materials. Drop-off locations will be posted.

Community partners and sponsors play a vital role in the success of this project. Support opportunities include:

• Serving as a plastic bag drop-off location
• Sponsoring supplies, bins, or transportation
• Providing financial or in-kind donations
• Encouraging volunteer participation
• Assisting with outreach and promotion

Through the Plastic Bags to Mats Project, youth gain hands-on experience in service, environmental stewardship, and community leadership. They learn that everyday actions can create meaningful change when guided by purpose and compassion.
